How to Import Brazilian Chicken Paws into China

China is the largest market in the world for chicken paws — sold locally as "phoenix claws". Importing successfully starts with sourcing from a GACC-listed Brazilian plant and ends with clean customs clearance at a Chinese port.

GACC establishment registration comes first

Before any container can clear customs in China, the exporting plant must be registered and listed with GACC (China's General Administration of Customs) under Decree 248. Only chicken paws produced at a plant carrying both a valid Brazilian SIF registration and an active GACC establishment number are eligible for import into China. Confirm the plant's GACC number on the veterinary health certificate before booking the shipment — see our SIF, GACC & halal guide.

Ports, delivery terms and clearance

Frozen chicken paw containers from Brazil discharge mainly at Shanghai, Guangzhou (Nansha), Shenzhen (Yantian), Tianjin, Qingdao and Dalian, depending on the buyer's inland distribution. Shipments move under CIF or CFR reefer terms, with China Customs and GACC carrying out document review and inspection on arrival — see the CIF vs FOB guide for how responsibility splits between buyer and seller along the route.

Payment terms and the document set

Chinese importers most commonly settle by documentary letter of credit (L/C). The document set presented against the L/C typically includes the veterinary/health certificate referencing the plant's GACC establishment number, certificate of origin, packing list, bill of lading and an inspection certificate confirming grade and condition at loading. Importing into China — FAQ

Common questions about importing chicken paws into China.

Why does China import so many chicken paws?

Chicken paws — known in China as 'phoenix claws' (鳳爪) — are a prized ingredient in dim sum and braised dishes. Domestic Chinese production cannot cover demand for the cut, so China is by far the largest import market for Brazilian chicken paws.

Does the Brazilian plant need to be registered with GACC?

Yes. Under China Customs (GACC) Decree 248, only foreign meat plants listed on the GACC establishment registry are eligible to export to China. Every shipment must originate from a GACC-listed SIF plant and reference its establishment number on the health certificate.

Which Chinese ports receive frozen chicken paw containers?

Shanghai, Guangzhou (Nansha), Shenzhen (Yantian), Tianjin, Qingdao and Dalian are the main discharge ports for frozen poultry reefer containers from Brazil, chosen based on the buyer's inland distribution network.
